Recent Yaesu radios in general are 2-5 years radios. Something WILL fail in that time frame. The FTM-500 is a pathetic radio for the money. For FM and Fusion it does it's job. But that's about it. Even John CROOK knows it's junk, but that's where he gets his paycheck from. Quality control for these CHINESE built radios with the Yaesu name is gone. Baofeng builds a more reliable radio!

Looks nice. If bluetooth realy works you parhaps can also use it handsfree in a car when driving with muliple cars as a group to the same location and easy stay in contact without using mobile phones

I stopped paying dues when the ARRL didn’t advocate giving Advanced Class licensees Extra class priveleges, despite already passing half the former extra exam and 13WPM code test. Now I see these codeless extras walking around the hamfests with these 1x2 calls……makes me wanna puke.

Where I live, you might hit a mile, mile and a half. The only thing is nobody is on any of this stuff, so it's hard to say.

Another thing to consider for FRS radios: in a shtf situation, you can crossband with them to get that additional range.

Great little radio ! And they come in pairs too . Um , those contacts on the sides bottom ? Yes , that looks like a stand that you can put the radios in . But the part that impresses me is you might beable to encrypt the frequency your on . So you can cuss your ass off at her / she at you , when you screw up . And as with any radio , they work best at LINE OF SIGHT . They are simple . That is fantastic for short distances . Why not . Better than tieing up your cell phones .

Compander is probably speech processing or compression. ( The old Lafayette Radio CB walkie talkies had a switch called "Range Boost" that increased the modulation percentage). The scrambler function is probably speech inversion that mixes the TX audio with the CTCSS tone. I have some Kenwood FRS radios that work that way.

Attenuating radio signals might be most easiest accomplished by an inline attenuator. Unplug your rubber duck, put an attenuator stub in between the radio and antenna, and you're good to go. A simple project or plans to make up BF or other standard fittings, in simple steps like 6db, 9db, etc. would be damn easy to whip up (or buy?) now, inexpensively. A bit more difficult would be a project to digitize and compress an HF signal into microburst mode, so a short transmission just goes out as a chirp. Much less vulnerable to scanners and interception. Should be another simple inexpensive project for someone familiar wih this area.

Bob, if I may suggest: Instead of saying "I'm going to let it drop" use the pro words "wait one." In a busy network, that conveys the same message way faster--plus the fact that you are coming back right away. The little things add up.

Perhaps the biggest problem with a middle eastern war, is that the US might (should, IMO) be fully comitted on two fronts, draining our slim resources to a low. Which the PRC might see as a uniquely good time to attack Taiwan, forcing us to fight in three fronts. And we just have the assets to really take that on alone.

Frs has a 0.5-1w limit, your definitely not gonna get far with those. The old emergency portables like GE, Realistic, kraco are what you want.

If ARRL doesn't solve its issues quickly, it may be too late. Is it the victim of entrenched boomer leadership not wanting to give up control? Not wanting to be transparent? The Fourth Turning, as presented in the work of historians Strauss and Howe, paints a cyclical view of history. During a Fourth Turning, formerly trusted institutions - whether governmental, financial, or societal- often undergo dramatic changes during a crisis. If ARRL don't get their $#!t together soon and reform themselves they will be replaced. The longer this drags on, the more likely they will never recover.

why dont you talk about something interesting? like when you buy a fusion radio, yaesu wont tell you if you get on the wrong side of a repeater keeper he can BLOCK A STATION.I can assure you banning or blocking does exist,The use the radios unique id number,an electronic serial number. I think down the road you're not going to have to take a license test just pay money. A lot of you ham operators are on some of you don't even deserve a license way they conduct themselves.🤔

To each his own. In my opinion, you are not making contacts, your computer is. It's like having your secretary contact my secretary and we'll get together for a lunch that never happens. I don't condone forward progress in communications, it's great. I just don't think it's worthy of the same awards that another ham actually spent the time to achieve whatever goal they set out to achieve. I was a machinist by trade. My title was Manual Machinist. There are CNC machinist out there making good money pressing a button. Sometimes they made more than I did and I was the one that had to fix their mistakes because they didn't know how to. I guess that's just my mentality. I don't think FT-8 is ruining Ham radio, I just think they are expecting, AND Getting, the same recognition as a heart surgeon, with only an MD certification. What you describe is overly simplified. Merging data between two or more databases is routinely done all over the industry. When one database source has a displaced field with data populated, and it's merged, then the result leaves us with a corrupted data base. When this corrupted data is sent through to applications for presentation, the applications will experience syntax errors and then either terminate or suspend execution. That's all there is too it. Game over. Fix. Either revert back to last known good database (if available) from backup and accept losses from mergers events afterwards and install updated syntax merging filters for future merges or appendence Or simply start all over. Many catastrophic merge errors can happen easily over a missing charactar from a parsing rule. (filtering charactar strings)

I dropped being a member in February of 2024. I’ve been a ham since 1984, and a member except when my kids were little as there was minimal money to go around. So, I’ve been a member since around 1990, but because of their non transparency, jacking the membership up like they did, plus a couple of other things, I can’t support the way they do things. A few years ago, our local club was supporting a back country extreme foot race and we took a lot of pictures and I wrote an article describing the challenge’s of getting radio operators into remote areas as well as tracking the runners. I sent it to the person in charge of allowing articles into CQ and it was denied. The response I got was “while your article is excellent, and supports our vision of public assistance and emergency communications, we do not support photographs of Amateur Radio Operators wearing firearms”. What they did not bother to ask is why we were wearing firearms. The simple answer was that of the three operators who were in the pictures, two were full time employed law enforcement officers, myself being one of them. The other was not, but in Idaho, in the back country, odd things can happen. It was merely a rejection, no questions asked. Then recently, in the last six months, there have been other things happening with the ARRL that leaves one to scratch his/her head.

I have a VE application that needs to be processed. I called yesterday and they cannot process new VE applications yet.
